The Captain America Project: 20 artists, 20 drawings of Captain America on one page.
#20: Rick Leonardi (Cloak and Dagger, Spider-Man 2099, X-Men)

When I started the Captain America Project back in 2010, I truly didn’t think it would take 13 years to complete the page. The penultimate panel #19 was drawn by Bob McLeod way back in 2014 and the past seven years seemed to fly by. But better late than never, I’m fortunate to finally have this amazing jam page completed by 20 of my favorite comic book artists whose careers spanned from the Golden Age to today.
I attended the New York Comic Con on October 15 with a mission to get a sketch from one of my all time favorite artists Rick Leonardi to complete the page. Over the last ten years I’ve been able to acquire several convention sketches from Rick and had some wonderful conversations about his work. Going into NYCC a couple of weeks back I knew a Captain America sketch from Rick would be a great way to top off the page.
As he was drawing it, several people on line behind me had some very kind words for the jam page, and were particularly in awe of the fact it was signed by both Stan Lee and Captain America’s co-creator Jim Simon back in 2011. An amazing coincidence occurred when an attendee chatting with Rick pointed to Joe Simon’s signature and said “He’s my grandfather.”
It was an absolute pleasure to meet Jim Simon’s grandson Jesse Simon and chatting about the jam page, his grandfather’s work in comics and Jesse’s current project Shieldmaster: Blast To the Past featuring the Simon and Kirby heroes The Fly, Fighting American, Private Strong, Bullseye and Stuntman (his Kickstarter for the project can be found here).
Several folks asked me what I plan to do with the Captain America Project now that the page is complete. I will be getting it framed and enjoying it on my wall for awhile. Down the road my hope would be to donate it to the Library of Congress as an example of a great visual representation of one of comics’ greatest heroes, drawn by twenty amazing artists whose work spanned from the 1940’s to the present.

A big thank you to all 20 artists that made this jam page a reality:
